The Machining & Metrology Unit is one of the training unit of the Industrial Centre of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. We provide the practical training to the engineering students in the using of several metal cutting machines and measuring equipment as well as supporting their final year project.

Most of the modules are base on one week duration except the Integrated Engineering Project. Following listed the module code and the title. Click on the link to access the detail descriptions of each training module.

1481 Integrated Engineering Project (4 weeks)


( 0101 ) Marking Out, Measurement, Fitting, & Assembly
  • Marking out for fitting and machining.
  • Material removal by hand processes or power tools (filing, drilling, threading, and reaming).
  • Workshop measurement.
  • Surface roughness evaluation using comparison methods.
  • Working to BS 4500 (limits and fits).
  • Methods of mechanical joining and assembly.
  • Use of fasteners.

( 0102 ) Metal cutting Processes 1 - Turning
  • Introduction to lathe work and metal cutting principles.
  • Applications and limitations of turning processes.
  • Lathe construction, tooling, typical turning operations, and setting up procedures.
  • Types of threads.
  • External thread cutting.
  • Lubrication and citting fluids.
  • Safety and maintenance features.

( 0103 ) Metal cutting Processes 2 - Milling
  • Introduction to milling.
  • Applications and limitations of milling processes.
  • Machine types and construction.
  • Tooling, typical milling operations and setting up procedures.
  • Jigs and fixtures.
  • Safety and maintenances features.
  • Use of dividing heads.

( 0104 ) Basic Machining - Turning & Milling
  • Introduction to turning and milling.
  • Applications and limitations.
  • Types and construction of centre lathe and vertical milling machine.
  • Tooling, typical operations, and setting up procedures.
  • Safety and maintenance features.

( 0106 ) Basic Machining & CNC
  • Introduction to turning and milling.
  • Applications and limitations.
  • Types and construction of centre lathe and vertical milling machine.
  • Tooling, typical operations, and setting up procedures.
  • Safety and maintenance features.
  • Introduction to CNC milling and basic part programming.

( 0108 ) Metal Cutting Processes and Fitting
  • Use of common hand tools including files, hacksaw, hammer, scriber, calipers, dividers, steel rule, chisel, surface plate, surface gauge, vernier calipers, micrometer, vee-block, centre punch.
  • Marking out principal and hands-on practice on marking out tools.
  • Fitting practice including filing, sawing, drilling, reaming, and thread cutting. Introduction to turning and milling processes.
  • Applications and limitations of each machining process.
  • Construction of centre lathe and vertical milling machine.
  • Use of tooling and set up procedures.
  • Safety and maintenance features in using these machines.
  • Hands-on practice including turning, facing, parting off, taper turning, face milling, side milling, boring, and slot milling.

( 0109 ) Basic Machining and Fitting
  • Use of common hand tools including files, hacksaw, hammer, scriber, calipers, dividers, steel rule, chisel, surface plate, surface gauge, vernier calipers, micrometer, vee-block, centre punch.
  • Marking out principal and hands-on practice on marking out tools.
  • Fitting practice including filing, sawing, drilling, reaming, and thread cutting. Introduction to turning. Applications and limitations.
  • Types and construction of centre lathe.
  • Tooling, typical operations, and setting up procedures.
  • Safety and maintenance features.
  • Hands-on practice including turning, facing, parting off, taper turning, face milling.

(1481) Integrated Engineering Project (4 weeks)
  • This training module aims to develop students a good understanding on the design and make of an engineering device.
  • Training Contents :- Design and drafting. Choice and selection of engineering materials, equipemnt, and processes. Project planning, control, coordination, and costing.
  • Workshop activities include :- Use and application of conventional machine tools - lathe, milling machine, shaping machine, and grinding machine. Use and application of AMT equipment CNC lathe & CNC milling, Electro Discharge Machining, Wire-cut EDM, CNC Grinding, Laser material processing, and precision measurement using CMMs.
  • Fitting, assembly, and testing of the project.
