Project Title: Longitudinal Sliding System for RE Scanning


1. INTRODUCTION

In the process of Reverse Engineering (RE), the scanning systems usually are fixed in position or only have a very limited working range. In some application cases, dealing with the complexity of intricate 3D parts require to have additional working range.

To achieve high quality results and specially tailor to different RE needs, it often requires particular sets of slide rail to accommodate its application such as digitizing of automotive parts.

To facilitate the process, this project aims to design and fabricate a sliding rail system for the RE scanning

2. TECHNICAL OUTLINE

In this project, the students are required to develop a longitudinal sliding system for our COMET optical digitizing system.

The basic concept of is to get a pallet for loading the part, sliding it along longitudinal direction with simple linear transmission mechanism and lock it in a position and identify its location with reference.

A system in many aspects is simple and effective way to allow scanning targets travel along x-axis and should consist of the following features:-

a. The base of system should be rigid and stable,
b. The device contain functions of leveling adjustment and fixed onto a work bench or machine,
c. A proper locking means should be applied for securing the pallet in a position,
d. The transmission mechanism for travel along is linear, which is manual control,
e. A distance measure meter should be equipped as to determine the position of the loading pallet with a fix reference.
f. Efficient changeover device makes the distance meter easily release and hold.

4. REQUIREMENTS

Students are required to:

  • Design and manufacture the Longitudinal Sliding System based on the given outline and
  • specifications; Schedule the manufacturing process;
  • Prepare a bill of materials and a budget estimation for the whole project;
  • Conduct commission testing;

Upon the completion of the MU project, a group presentation and a group report are also required.
