M10 - Wide Flap Gate for Disabled & Passengers with Heavy Luggage

Project No.: M10

Project Title: Wide Flap Gate for Disabled & Passengers with Heavy Luggage

1. INTRODUCTION

The Wide Flip Gate is one of the tolling gates used in the train or underground stations. When compared with the normal roller gates, the Wide Flip Gate has wider passage and is good for the wheelchair users or passenger with large luggage. On the other hand, this wide passage has higher chances of allowing passengers escaping from normal tolling system.

In the mean time, the KCRC is using the electric locks to control the passage for disabled and passenger with large luggage. The passage is adjacent to the roller gate and is two separate systems. The passenger is required to ring a bell to ask the Station Officer in the Platform to open the electric locks. After pushing the luggage inside, the passenger is required to enter through the roller gate and collect the good from the other side of the passage. It is highly inconvenient to the wheelchair users.

In this project, students are required to design and make a prototype of a Wide Flip Gate for the wheelchair users or passenger with large luggage. The gating system is an integrated system, which will replace the existing electric lock door and the adjacent roller gate.

2. TECHNICAL OUTLINE

The Wide Flip Gate consists of three major components: the gate, the tolling system, and sensing system. The gate is used to control the flow of the passengers. Under normal circumstance, the gate should be closed to prevent the passenger to go in. It must be integrated with the existing tolling system, Octopus, used in the KCRC. The sensing system has two functions. The first function is to control the sequence of the gate so that the passenger can enter the gating system safely. The other function is to prevent passengers escaping from the tolling system.

In this project, the students are required to design and make the Wide Flip Gate prototype including the gate, sensing system and preparing the PLC programs. In the PLC program, one set of I/O is reserved to integrate with the tolling system. As he product will be used in the public place, safety is utterly important in the design of the product.

3. SPECIFICATIONS

  • The size and dimension can be got in direct site measurement in one of the station.
  • Motor actuated mechanism.
  • Completely AUTOMATIC.
  • PLC or Microcomputer control.
  • I/O to link up with the existing tolling system -- Octopus.
  • Sensors to control the passage of the passengers.

4. REQUIREMENTS

Students are required to design and manufacture a prototype of a "Wide Flap Gate" which will be used by the disabled and passengers with heavy luggage. The following illustration shows the sequence of operations for the existing system and the "Wide Flip Gate" used in MTR system.

The design is open and students are free to initiate better design for system optimization. However, the system must be convenient to use and to a certain extend can prevent passengers from escaping the tolling system.
