Background information and Theory

Milling machines are widely used for various purposes such as milling, drilling and boring. Different manufacturing processes can be carried out by the proper application of the machines. For the MU project, a bench-type vertical milling machine was made. It is portable and easy to be installed. As a result, operations can be taken place without situational limits.

Milling machines can be divided into four main parts:

  a) column and worktable

      ~contains: vice

        column: vertical motion

        worktable: horizontal motion

  b) headstock

      ~contains: spindle and the motor and pulleys set which provide a rotation

                       to the cutting tool

  c) knee

      ~works with the saddle and the ball screw

  d) saddles

      ~cooperate with the ball screws to align the motion of both x, y and z axes.
