Project Title: Intelligent Car Parking System Model


1. INTRODUCTION

Most of the building in Hong Kong both commercial and residential are tall and of high density. Space is equivalent to money. However car parking is unavoidable in a city like Hong Kong. An intelligent car parking system which can receive more cars with less space may be one of the solution easing this problem. Figure 1 below shows the model of a fully automatic system for transferring and parking the cars in a car factory located in Germany. One of the core portions of the system is the multi-storeyed car parking building in which cars are transported automatically to the parking locations between storeies.

Siemens Company has initiated a joint project with the Automation Unit of IC intending to design and build a model demonstrating an Intelligent Car Parking System suitable to Hong Kong environment.

2. TECHNICAL OUTLINE

A building model of 3 to 4 stories of suitable scale is to be constructed from aluminum profile. Sensors, actuators and other devices will be installed in the model. Intelligent control systems employing Siemens equipment is to be set up in order to monitor and control the manipulation of the cars movement in the building. The operations of the system will be similar to a commercial car park. However the car will be taken care automatically after the driver drop and leave his car at the entrance of the building. The equipment to be used in the project may include pneumatic components & actuators, electrical actuators, PLC, etc The exact specifications of project are according to the final decision made after meeting and discussing with the engineering staff of the company.

3. SPECIFICATIONS

The specifications of project are according to the final decision made after meeting and discussing with the engineering staff of the company. The model will be built using a suitable scale to the real building with 3 to 4 storeies and transparent walls suitable for demonstration. The equipment to be used will probably pneumatic components & actuators, electrical actuators, PLC, etc.

4. REQUIREMENTS

Students are required to:

  • Design and manufacture the revolving fixture based on the given outline and specifications;
  • Schedule the manufacturing process;
  • Prepare a bill of materials and a budget estimation for the whole project;
  • Conduct commission testing;

Upon the completion of the MU project, a group presentation and a group report are also required.
