Manufacturing

To manufacture all of the parts of our machine, we used most of facilities in industrial centre in The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. The manufacturing processes of the mechanical parts in our machine would be introduced in the following:

Manufacturing description

Reference part no: P01-0022

Material: Stainless steel

Manufacturing process:

These two parts are made by manual turning machine. The upper parts are drilled with manual milling machine and finally weld these two parts together.

Reference part no: P01-0025

Material: Mild steel

Manufacturing process:

This part is made by manual turning machine, milling machine and drilling machine.

Reference part no: P01-0008, P01-0010, P01-0011, P01-00(27-29), P01-00(36-37), P01-00(39-40)

Material: Aluminum

Manufacturing process:

These two kinds of profiles (40X80, 40X40) with different length are cut by cutting machine, then use milling machine to mill the length become fit and do some drilling and taping for screws' installation.

Material: stainless steel

Manufacturing process:

First we use milling machine to cut the length, width and also do the surface finishing. Then use manual milling to drill holes.

Pins and bushers inside turning table

Material: Pins - mild steel

Bushers – copper

Manufacturing process:

They are manufactured by CNC turning machine because they are required to have a very high tolerance ( -0.2mm )

Material: stainless steel

Manufacturing process:

They are manufactured by CNC turning machine because they are required to have a very high tolerance (+ 0.2mm ). Then the holes of these parts are drilling by manual milling machine.

Material: Stainless steel

Manufacturing process:

It is manufactured by CNC milling machine as it is large that it cannot be manufactured by manual milling machine easily.

Material: acrylic

Manufacturing process:

It is manufactured by CNC milling machine as it is large that it cannot be manufactured by manual milling machine easily too.

Turnplate

Material: medium carbon steel

Manufacturing process:

It is manufactured by CNC milling machine because it is required a high accuracy of position and dimension of holes.

Material: stainless steel

Manufacturing process:

It is manufactured by CNC turning machine.

* these two parts are connected with a few points of welding so as to concrete this sub-assembly.

Ratchet, P01-0038 and Lock

Material: iron

Manufacturing process:

These are made by wire-cutting machine as the shape of them are complicated and only using wire-cut can made them smooth and accurate.

PLC control panel box

Material: sheet metal

Manufacturing process:

This box is manufactured by CNC punching machine. Then use folding machine to form the box shape.

To conclude, we manufacture most of them in MMU workshop. In this workshop, we did aluminum profile cutting, blocks milling, discs and some parts turning, drilling holes and taping.

However, some of turning and milling parts has complicated shape or lots of holes that we are not confident enough to finish it with high accuracy and high surface finishing such as bearing cover and the main shaft of turntable. Therefore, we use CNC turning and milling machine to manufacture it. Some of our machine parts have complicated shape such as gears in turn table; we made it by using wire cutting machine.
